What is "Flipping?"
Dear Parents,
As Hilburn Academy continues to focus on STEM education and teaching the 21st Century Learner by integrating the SMARTboard, iPads, and hands-on learning, we are now excited to share with you, a new concept that will take this process to the next step. I would like to introduce to you a new innovative and efficient method of instruction called “Flipping the Classroom.”
“Flipping” is a concept derived from Dr. Lodge McCammon, Specialist in Curriculum and Contemporary Media at the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation at NCSU. Flipping is a system where the teachers pre-record their lessons and post them to their website. Students are to watch the taped lessons at home before class. This allows students to come to class prepared with some background knowledge of content, and questions for discussions. Teachers will then be able to test ways to use these videos to enhance instruction for 5th grade. Flipping will also serve as a resource for parents, allowing them to have full knowledge of classroom instruction and assist with their child’s learning. This model is developed for secondary education, but we are piloting it for implementation in the elementary level due to the potential for success in 5th grade. This process will look far different in 5th grade, than it will in secondary education.
Teachers will plan for differentiated activities for remediation, review, or enrichment of students depending on how well they grasped the concept. Flipping will also serve as a resource for parents, allowing them to have full knowledge of classroom instruction and assist with their child’s learning. This model is developed for secondary education, but last year was piloted for implementation in the elementary level with great success! I saw wonderful results from all of my students, as they were engaged in higher level thinking, and participating in collaborate groups doing differentiated activities at their instructional level. Students will also be creating their own flip videos and paper slides during class to demonmstrate knowledge and application of skills.
Flipping allows struggling learners to rewind, re-watch, and review videos for remediation. It also lends itself to challenge opportunities for higher-level learners, as they may go ahead to view upcoming topics after mastering current content. Students who do not have computer access at home will be permitted to use our classroom computers or iPads to view the lessons in the morning.
In the upcoming weeks you will be receiving further detail and instruction on how to assist your child at home with “Flipping”. I look forward to partnering with you on this exciting journey. Please feel free to visit www.fi.ncsu.edu/fizz for more information.
As always, please contact me with any questions you may have!
Sincerely,
Keeley Griffin
