D.C. Details as of 4/23/2013
General Information:
The fifth grade will be traveling to Washington, D.C. this year. We will depart first thing, on the morning of April 24th, and will return late, on the 26th. Now that there are rules and laws against tours of The White House, we are working to decide which other site we would like to see while we are in town. We will still take a picture in front of it. We have many great sites planned. This is the same tourism company that was used last year! As details come in, and are approved by the Wake County Board, I will update this tab. For now please know/do the following:
Mrs. Bennai graciously offered to head up fundraising. If you see her, or have a moment, please thank her for her efforts and hard work in organizing so many great events with other parent volunteers.
Please contact Mrs. Bennai for any questions regarding fundraising. Her email is [email protected].
Trip Details:
Our itinerary is set, our payments are in, and we are all set to go to Washington, D.C. on April 24th! With the recent events happening in the news and various cities in the United States, I have been in constant communication with our head tour guide. He returned from another school trip yesterday and said all went smoothly. Students were still allowed to go into the Capitol building, and the trip operated as normal. Students were still very safe, enjoyed the trip, and were able to access all memorials and locations as planned.
Final Reminders:
Students are not allowed to have cell phones under any circumstance during the day on our trip. School rules and policies still apply to the field trip.
Dress code still applies for students while on the trip.
- Shorts must easily be at least fingertip length when a students shoulders are relaxed.
- Tank tops must be three fingers wide and no straps of any sort are allowed to be showing.
Review the blue information/itinerary sheet, and the yellow sheet (you only received one if you are a chaperone) with your student prior to the trip.
The bus LOADS at 6:00 am. We will LEAVE AS SOON AS THE BUS IS LOADED. You must be AT SCHOOL BY 6:00 am.
Students are allowed to bring one small suitcase (carry-on size or smaller) with their clothes and sanitary items, and one SMALL bag for their bus entertainment items. Any items a student wishes to have access to on the bus must be in this small bag. Any item that is stored under the bus will only be available once we check in to the hotel at night around 9 pm Wednesday 4/24.
Students should bring a camera if they have one to take pictures. Ipod touch devices ARE ALLOWED seeing as there is not a cell phone capability on this device. Cell phones during the day while we tour around D.C. are not allowed for students.
Any necessity items that students wish to carry around D.C. during the day, should be put in their Chaperone's bag. Only Chaperone's and staff members are allowed to carry bags during the day.
Necessity items include a small travel size umbrella, water, a rain jacket, toiletry items, and a snack.
Hilburn Academy, staff members, and chaperones are not responsible for stolen or lost items.
Chaperone Details:
Stay with your assigned group of students at ALL times.
Students needing to use the restroom at approved times should always go with a buddy and you are more than welcome to take them with your group if this makes you more comfortable.
Students SHOULD NEVER be alone.
If you are meeting the group in D.C. (you must have been approved by the field trip company through me) it is your responsibility to get up with the group. The buses will not wait in a certain location for you. Please take the itinerary with you and check weather conditions, traffic conditions, and directions prior to leaving and during your trip up.
If you are staying in D.C. (you must have been approved by the field trip company through me) you must check in with me AFTER our visit to National Geographic. I will then re-assign your students to another chaperone, and let you know at this time that it is "ok" for you to leave. This is to ensure the safety of all of the students. I appreciate your cooperation in advance.
If you are not riding with the group up to D.C. you still have an assigned seat on the bus. Please see the documents below and locate your name and row. The rows are numbered by counting on the right of the aisle if you are standing on the bus at the front of the bus.
